About Us

Aligned with the vision of The Global Health Network (TGHN), “Equity in Health Research by improving methods, building careers & sharing knowledge,” the Institute for Global Health and Development (IGHD) is established as a regional hub dedicated to strengthening health research capacity, innovation, and sustainable development across low- and middle-income countries. The Institute is committed to implementing TGHN’s strategic vision and goals by promoting open access to knowledge, facilitating training and mentorship, and fostering partnerships with government institutions, universities, and research organizations to advance global health research and policy development.

IGHD works to understand and address the challenges and opportunities that shape health research systems, supporting national and regional priorities while connecting researchers to global platforms and collaborations. The Institute promotes a collaborative approach to research implementation through the following actions:

I. Facilitating training initiatives and connecting researchers to TGHN’s global resource and data-sharing platforms.

II. Promoting mentorship, networking, and collaboration among multidisciplinary researchers, institutions, and policymakers.

III. Supporting the exchange of knowledge, expertise, and best practices to strengthen evidence-based decision-making and research translation.

The Institute for Global Health and Development (IGHD) serves as a leading centre for research, education, and innovation in global health. Its mission is to generate evidence that informs policy, improves public health systems, and drives sustainable development through science, collaboration, and capacity building.

IGHD’s activities encompass research on infectious and non-communicable diseases, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), maternal and child health, climate and environmental health, and health systems strengthening. The Institute also leads initiatives focused on digital health transformation, data analytics, and the One Health approach — integrating human, animal, and environmental health research.

  1. Vision

To build healthier, more equitable, and resilient societies through innovation, research excellence, and cross-sectoral collaboration that integrates science, policy, and community action.

  1. Mission

To advance global health and sustainable development by generating, translating, and applying evidence that strengthens health systems, informs policy, and improves the well-being of populations worldwide.

  1. Ongoing Research and Collaboration

IGHD engages in collaborative projects with national and international partners — including universities, global health networks, and development agencies — in areas such as disease surveillance, AMR monitoring, outbreak preparedness, and implementation science. These initiatives aim to enhance local diagnostic capacity, improve research quality, and contribute to regional and global health security.

  1. Infrastructure and Capacity Building

To sustain high-quality research and emergency preparedness, IGHD invests in modern laboratories, data systems, and workforce training. The Institute supports advanced facilities for molecular diagnostics, microbiology, and environmental health studies, equipped for next-generation sequencing (NGS), RT-PCR, and AMR detection platforms.

  1. Future Needs and Sustainability

To ensure long-term sustainability, IGHD prioritizes:

  1. Expanding laboratory and digital infrastructure for AMR and epidemic surveillance.
  2. Promoting renewable energy solutions to support continuous operations.
  3. Strengthening advanced training and mentorship programs for early-career researchers.
  4. Broadening funding and partnership networks to enhance research sustainability.
  1. Key Research Priorities

  1. Antimicrobial resistance surveillance and stewardship across human, animal, and environmental sectors.
  2. Epidemiological and molecular characterization of infectious diseases.
  3. Strengthening diagnostic and data systems for outbreak detection and response.
  4. Improving maternal, newborn, and child health through evidence-based interventions.
  5. Advancing climate and environmental health research within a One Health framework.
  1. Media and Global Recognition

IGHD and its partners have been recognized across regional and international platforms for contributions to global health research and capacity strengthening. Their work has been featured by institutions such as The Global Health Network, World Health Organization, and leading universities and development agencies, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing equitable health research worldwide.

Key Areas of Focus:

Knowledge mobilization and sharing

The Guinea Centre works closely with TGHN Team to Identify & Share High-Value Research Resources for Local/Regional Groups in TGHN Africa/Asia/LAC Hub.

Early Career Researcher Capacity Building

The Centre Empowers Early Career Researchers: Hands-On Workshops, Webinars, Career Development, and Site Exchange Initiatives for Unlocking Potentials Through Education.

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and One Health

AMR is escalating in Guinea due to antibiotic misuse, poor infection control, and inadequate surveillance. Research and One Health training are crucial for effective solutions.

Grantsmanship and Collaboration

The Guinea centre equips early career researchers with resources to secure funding, including training, mentorship, and networking opportunities to promote research advancement in Guinea.

Women in Global Health Research and Leadership

As a key priority, the Guinea centre focuses also on Empowering Women in Evidence-Based Research for Guinea's Advancement and Inclusive Development.

Resources:

Here, we attempt to bring together information, resources and research from organizations and networks in Guinea on Global Health Research. The aim is to make it as easy as possible to find the right information, support and guidance, by connecting Guinea researchers and making all reliable information and tools accessible and discoverable.
