About: Nassifu Ssemwanga (Uganda) is a passionate Nurse-Midwife and an alumnus of the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Cape Town. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Nursing from Makerere University in Uganda, and a Master of Science in Nursing Degree at the University of Cape Town, focusing on clinical research. Nassifu is a promising academic and clinical researcher with a key research interest in maternal, neonatal and child health. His current work focuses on addressing an important issue relating to maternal and newborn health, identified as one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (3.1). This will highlight opportunities for improving immediate postpartum and newborn care within the initial 24 hours following birth to prevent avoidable maternal and neonatal deaths and disabilities. Nassifu has practised as a nurse-midwife in several institutions in Uganda and is currently serving as a nurse educator/lecturer at the Islamic University in Uganda. He strives to instil in his nurse trainees a profound understanding of evidence-based practices and critical thinking skills to make a positive impact on society. Nassifu envisions leveraging his academic and professional competencies to mentor and educate the next generation of nursing professionals, addressing the shortage of highly trained nurses and midwives in Uganda.
